The script - written by Danny Strong and rewritten by Daniels - is based on a series of articles Wil Haygood, 

A Butler Well Served by This Election, published in the Washington Post in 2008. Allen, who followed the mandate of eight presidents (starting with Harry Truman, 1952, and ending with Ronald Regan in 1986), being witness to important events like the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement, became a public figure after the first article and was invited to attend the inauguration of Barack Obama. 

Butler died in April 2010 at age 90.
